Why do we wait? We live in a world where there's not enough time to run to our next destination; a world where relaxation is something only experienced in our dreams - if we can find the time to sleep. It makes me wonder...
Why do we wait? We live in a culture that has shown us how to live the fast-paced life. We're told faster is better. When we have the rare opportunity to take a break, we instead decide to find something else to check off of our to-do list. So, somebody tell me...
Why do we wait? We know time is limited. We know we're constantly busy. We know time is in short supply. We know we don't get time back. Yet, we still wait.
You may be wondering what everybody is waiting to do. To tell you the truth, I'm wondering, too. I actually don't know what you and everybody else is waiting to do, but I do know that I'm waiting to do a lot. Some things to do are big, some wouldn't take much time at all, but I still choose to wait.
Why do we wait? It's not because we're too busy or because we haven't gotten the chance to do it. It's because, in the moment when we're given the opportunity to do what God has given us the desire to do, we think we can do it later.
Later??? What Later? Since when do we have time to do it later? We don't. And we know we don't and won't have the time for later. Yet, in that moment, we convince ourselves that we will. Why? Because it's just another lie the Devil wants us to believe. A lie I've fallen victim to one too many times.
I work at a nursing home as a CNA, but for fun I like to play music for the residents. Last year, I had a resident request a song that I didn't know, so I told him I'd learn it and play it for him next time. About a week had passed and I finally took time to learn the song. Instead of going to the nursing home and playing it for him that morning, I decided to wait until that afternoon. Once I got there, I found out that he had died unexpectedly minutes before. Did I learn from that situation that I shouldn't rely on later? Obviously not, because this year the same thing happened. I came home for Spring Break and had planned to go into the nursing home to play for a resident who really liked my fiddle playing. For some dumb reason, I decided to wait an extra day to go in and play for him. You can probably guess what happened....he died the day I was going to visit him.
Some might say I have bad luck, but, really, I have bad timing. Because I choose to live on my time instead of God's time. God doesn't say, "Do this tomorrow." Usually, He puts that thought into your mind the moment you're supposed to act on it. But that dang lie we believe stops us from doing God's will.
So the next time you think you should give someone a compliment- do it. The next time you feel you should tell someone you love them- do it. The next time you see somebody who needs help carrying something- help them. These are the little things that mean a lot and make a difference.
And the next time you just have a feeling you should give your friend a call or a visit- do it. The next time you feel called to share the Word of God with someone- do it.
Just do it! Quit waiting! Stop relying on false time. We are called to live in the present. Not the past, not the future, the present. The here and now. I give you permission to get caught up in the moment...because that moment is all we're guaranteed. Life can leave you in the blink of an eye. So don't rely on later, rely on now.
